Obesity in Scotland & Your Role
There is an increasing obesity problem in Scotland today with obesity figures having tripled in the UK since the 1980s. A recent health study found that 1 in 20 boys and 1 in 15 girls aged between two and fifteen years old is considered medically obese. If these figures continue to increase in the same manner it will result in a serious social and medical epidemic in the next twenty years.
In order to combat this problem, all of us who work directly with children need to collectively raise awareness and educate the general public.
The three groups that require educating in child obesity are young people, their parents and the professionals who work with them. We believe that in particular, educating health and non-medical professionals can pass on this knowledge on to the children and families. For example, teachers and youth workers need to have classes on healthy lifestyles and the effects of obesity. They also need to provide information to parents to increase awareness of the problem of child obesity. We will provide training and support to your staff on all aspects of childhood obesity.
