Supporting children and their parents
There are a number of serious and fatal diseases associated with obesity; with increasing numbers of obese children, obesity is a ticking time bomb for our society. Obesity figures have tripled in the UK since the 1980s and a government health study carried out in 2003 found that 13.7% of children in the UK are clinically obese. A more recent study found that 1 in 20 boys and 1 in 15 girls aged between two and fifteen years are considered obese. These numbers are greatly increased when measuring children who are merely overweight to 1 in 5 boys and 1 in 4 girls.
So what are the potential health risks that obese and overweight children face?
They are at increased risk of:
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular disease
- Coronary heart disease
- High blood pressure
